TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Chaos broke out in Banda Aceh Penitentiary in Bineh Blang village, Greater Aceh, after inmates clashed with police on Monday, April 30, 2012.
It occurred when ten policemen visited their detained friends convicted on drug charges. The visiting police corps did not come out until visiting hours were over,” Yatiman, Head of Regional Office of Ministry of Justice and Human Rights in Aceh, told journalists at the prison.
According to him, when the warden asked the police officers to go home, the latter pounded the table and responded in a loud voice, inciting tension between them. The incident was later found out by the inmates. “The inmates defended the wardens who are regarded as their mentors,” he said.
The inmates later threw bottles to the visiting rooms and burned the belongings of the detained policemen. The other wardens tried to calm them down. “It was just a misunderstanding.”he said. The visitors later retreated and the detained policemen were secured in one of the rooms to douse the inmates' anger.
Yatiman said the three policemen in temporary detention there will be transferred to the Ingin Jaya police precinct in Greater Aceh and the inmate officer to the Lhok Nga correctional institution in Greater Aceh. One of the inmates who declined to be identified acknowledged their anger towards the entitlement attitude of the visiting officers. “If they come again, we will finish them off,” he snarled in a harsh tone.
